The Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) to the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging established an Annual Youth Award in an effort to encourage and recognize volunteerism among youth in the five counties - Bertie, Beaufort, Hertford, Martin, and Pitt. One award a year is made to youth whose efforts are making immediate and lasting benefits for older adults. The award consist of: 1) recognition through a media release; 2) certificate on behalf of the RAC; and, 3) generous contribution of $150 from First Citizen’s Bank.

The Hertford County Office of Aging nominated the Stars of Hope Gleaners Youth Dept., District 4 (Gleaners) for the Annual Youth Award. This youth group consists of girls, ages 8-18. These girls are taught appropriate behavior and manners, given numerous experiences in volunteering, and provided opportunities to learn how to help older adults in their community. Here is a list of some of the activities and volunteer services they are involved with:

bulletThe Gleaners visit a nursing home at least once a month for about 2 hours.  They interact with the residents by calling BINGO, reading, talking, singing, and helping push wheelchairs when needed.
bulletThe girls also go to the Nursing Home during Christmas and Easter.  at Christmas, the Gleaners go twice a month to sing Christmas carols and to deliver fruit.  At Easter, the girls go to read Easter poems, stories, and to sing Easter songs.
bulletThe Gleaners help in the community with yard work during the fall and summer.
bulletDuring the spring, they help seniors with washing windows and light housekeeping work.
bulletFor Thanksgiving, the Gleaners donate their time and money to assemble Thanksgiving boxes to give away to selected senior citizens.  They put the names of seniors in a box and draw out 3 older people to receive the boxes.  Some of the seniors say that they are so happy to have young people thinking about them.
bulletThis year, the Gleaners helped with the Senior Games in Greenville.  They plan to make this an ongoing activity.
bulletThe Gleaners do many other such activities throughout the year to help seniors.

The Gleaners average from 150 to 200 hours of volunteer service a year for seniors. These young ladies do a fine job offering their support and time to their community in helping older adults and spending quality time with seniors. The young ladies are under the direction of Elsie Powell, Chair Supervisor for the Gleaners.

Congratulations Stars!

The Gleaners are on hand to accept a check for $150 compliments of First Citizens Bank and a Certificate of Appreciation from Alice Sharpe, Regional Advisory Committee at a recent Hertford County Senior Fun Day
