MID-EAST DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

The Mid-East Development Corporation (MEDC) was organized by the Mid-East Commission Board of Directors in 1990 to serve as a vehicle to help fill gaps in the region.  MEDC is a 501(c)(3) corporation.  The non-profit corporation is governed by a 10-11 member interlocking Board of Directors.  The corporation operates through support from the Mid-East Commission staff.

Purposes:  The corporation is organized for the primary purposes of facilitating affordable housing and linking health and social services to housing.

Powers:  The corporation can access, develop and participate in the financing of housing and service options in the community.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Developed & operates Twin Gables - an 8-unit shared group residence in Ahoskie for elderly, disabled or handicapped - rental assistance.

Developed The Veranda - an 8-unit shared group residence for elderly, disabled or handicapped in Farmville - rental assistance.

Developed The Dogwoods - a 24-unit apartment complex for elderly, disabled or handicapped.

Partnership for the development of Mallard Creek - 24 unit apartment for elderly, disabled and handicapped.

Assisted the Town of Farmville in beginning the Farmville Affordable Home Ownership Program for low-to-moderate income homebuyers.

Created and operates the Seniors' Center in Belhaven at the request of the Town through a Community Development Block Grant - Entrepreneurial Empowerment Grant.

Accessed funding and assisted agencies in Beaufort, Martin, and Hertford counties in creating an Urgent Repair Program for seniors.

Obtained funding for computer access for persons with disabilities through the Partnership in Assistive Technology Program for Martin County Senior Center.

Secured Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation funding to increase stock of affordable housing choices for seniors. 

bullet

Working with Lumber River Council of Governments through their non-profit to develop a shared group residence (Dogwood Place) in Bladenboro, NC.

bullet

Entered partnership with Landura Companies for Wilson Associates apartment project in Sharpsburg.
