Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging
(Area Agency on
Aging) is an organization established by the Older Americans Act of 1965.
The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) works to provide a responsive community-base
system of services for older adults through: planning; funds administration
and quality assurance; information brokerage; program, resource, and systems
development, advocacy; and additional regional and county initiatives. We serve older adults and
their caregivers within the counties of Beaufort,
Bertie, Hertford,
Martin, and Pitt. Visit

County, North Carolina. We are open Monday through Thursday
from 7:00am - 6:00pm.

Mission Statement:
We will work to position this
region to address the demand from our communities to remain at home by
building:
 |
capacity in our local aging
network and resources, |
 |
self-empowerment in our
seniors, caregivers, people with disabilities, and |
 |
stronger supports for our
grandparents raising grandchildren. |
We will strive to create consumer
choices in community based services and resources that are readily available
to address needs. Communities will have good, timely information with
easily, seamless access to services and resources. Financial and
physical resources will by used responsibly and equitably to ensure safe and
comfortable communities in which to grow older. Communities will lead
healthier lifestyles from education and evidence-based wellness programs.

Our livable communities will be
empowered for self-advocacy to generate proactive approaches to successfully
age in our region.
The AAA functions to: 1) develop an area plan
for a comprehensive and coordinated system of home and community care; 2)
establish and fund networks of local service providers; 3) serve as an
advocate and focal point for older adults within the region; and, 4) house
the Long Term Ombudsman Program, Family
Caregiver Support Program, and Project C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternative to
Running on Empty) .
As one of 17 Area Agencies on Aging in North Carolina,
our goals are to:
 | administer the Home & Community Care Block Grant
services, Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman
Program, Family Caregiver
Support Program, and other grant funded services; |
 | develop a comprehensive and coordinated system of
service delivery within our counties; |
 | develop and administer an area aging plan based on
needs of older adults and their family caregivers, as well as input from county aging committees; |
 | help local communities respond to issues of aging
through training, planning, assessment, and technical assistance; |
 | generate public and private resources to maintain or
increase services for older adults and their caregivers; |
 | expand Project C.A.R.E. into eastern North Carolina. |
 | advocate for residents of long term care facilities
and older adults living in the community; |
 | convene and staff regional and local planning committees to
study current aging issues; |
 | provide technical assistance to regional members of
the NC Senior Tar Heel
Legislature; |
 | promote professional development for aging service
providers; |
 | provide support to local Nursing Home and Adult
Care Home Community Advisory Committees; |
 | resolve grievances in nursing homes and adult care homes; |
 | provide information and assistance to older consumers,
caregivers, and family members; |
 | distribute information about current legislation
affecting older adults; |
 | facilitate in the creation of housing choices through
program formation, advocacy, and proposal development; and |
 | provide support to Senior Games and other wellness
programs. |
In an effort to effectively carry out our goals and functions, we are
involved in numerous projects aside from those as stated above. Some
of these include:
 | function as a Data Hub for NC CareLINK - an
on-line searchable database for consumers to quickly get information
on resources in our counties, as well as throughout the state; |
 | advocate to inform and educate on the prevention of Elder
Abuse; |
